Cables — frequently asked questions

SWA cables feature steel wires wound around the inner bedding. Steel provides excellent mechanical protection against physical damage and high pulling tension. However, steel is a ferromagnetic material. If you pass a single-phase alternating current (AC) through a single-core SWA cable, it induces a magnetic field in the steel armour. This creates eddy currents and severe overheating, which can melt the insulation. Therefore, SWA is strictly used for multi-core cables (2-core, 3-core, 4-core, etc.), where the opposing magnetic fields of the cores cancel each other out.

AWA cables use aluminium wires instead of steel. Because aluminium is non-magnetic, it does not generate eddy currents or suffer from magnetic heating when a single-phase AC current passes through it. This makes AWA the standard and safe choice for single-core AC cables, which are often used in high-voltage power distribution networks.

  • Direct Underground Burial: Power distribution for street lighting, garden lights, and main incoming feeds.
  • Industrial Plants: Factories, refineries, and chemical plants with heavy machinery and high impact risks.
  • Outdoor Cable Trays: Open-air installations on walls, bridges, or roofs exposed to sunlight and weather.
  • Public Infrastructure: Railways, tunnels, airports, and power stations requiring high safety standards.
  • Hazardous Areas: Sites with explosion risks, high moisture, or potential exposure to chemical solvents.
  • Impact Resistance: Protection against crushing, stepping, and heavy falling objects.
  • Direct Burial: Safe to bury underground without extra conduit piping.
  • Rodent Proof: Metal layer prevents rats and gophers from chewing wires.
  • High Pulling Tension: Steel/aluminium armour withstands high pulling force during installation.
  • Safety Grounding: The armour can serve as a protective earthing conductor.
  • Weather Resistance: UV-stabilized outer sheath resists moisture, sunlight, and rain.
